Brooke Inman, In Love.

  • Main Gallery, Quirk Hotel 207 West Broad Street Richmond, VA 23220 (map)

OPENING RECEPTION: Thursday, July 12, 5:00 - 8:00 PM

How do you explain the feeling of falling in love? How can you articulate that? How do you share that with others (if you feel so inclined)?

For Brooke Inman, that feeling is communicated through a series of drawings and prints that will be featured in her upcoming solo show at Quirk opening July 12. "This particular selection of work is my reflection of falling in love," Inman explains. "There are a number of signifiers that represent love which take the form of collected and drawn objects."

These include the lemonade Inman and her partner shared at the State Fair, the pair of goldfish won in a carnival game, thoughts, musings, and reflections jotted down on paper. "This collection reveals my story through particular keepsakes. Even though these pieces come directly from my life, they will be viewed and interpreted in a number of different ways, based on the personal experiences of the viewer and their own journey with love."

Inman's exhibition will be comprised of new prints created through various processes including etching, lithography, and screen printing. If each piece begins as a drawing that communicates some aspect of falling in love, that experience is lived by the artist over and over again. "[Printmaking] gives me the ability to create unique variations of the same image," says Inman. "Each plate, stone, or screen goes through many processes before being inked and lovingly printed by hand."

Born in 1983, Inman grew up in the small town of DeMotte, Indiana. She moved to Richmond in 2006 to attend graduate school at Virginia Commonwealth University and completed her MFA in Painting and Printmaking in 2008. Inman currently serves as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Richmond in the Visual and Media Arts Practice Department and at VCU in the Painting and Printmaking Department. She also teaches printmaking classes at Studio Two Three.
